How a Heavy Metal Detox Benefits your Energy, Mood, & Gut Health.

Why is everybody talking about Heavy Metal Detox? Simple- we live in a world where it seems we’re more and more exposed to heavy metals. Heavy metals are found in our food, beauty products and even naturally present in the air making it challenging to not take in a certain amount of heavy metals.

So, what exactly are “heavy metals” ? Are they essential nutrients or do they cause harm to our body? There are two types of heavy metals- essential & toxic. The essential metals are nutrients in our diets such as zinc, iron, magnesium, and the toxic metals pollute our earth and environment causing people to get sick.

When toxic heavy metals like mercury, arsenic, aluminum, and lead accumulate in our bodies, it can cause symptoms of brain fog, hormonal imbalance and weaken our immune system. Toxic heavy metals can even cause inflammation in our digestive tract triggering leaky gut syndrome. This is because heavy metals are prime food for bad bacteria and release poisons in our gut causing improper digestion, fatigue, and nutritional deficiencies.

Toxic heavy metal exposure is pretty much inevitable to avoid because they build-up due to pollution and environmental factors. But don’t worry, we can take steps to detoxify and I am going to share three of my favorite naturals ways to do a heavy metal detox.

3 Natural ways to do a Heavy Metal Detox:

1. Increase your intake of detoxifying foods.

Adding detoxifying foods to your diet will help your liver eliminate dangerous toxins as well as boost liver health through anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral effects. By adding in these foods, your body's natural detoxification system will deplete toxins.

Powerful detoxifying food options to remove toxic heavy metals include:


*Milk Thistle

*Barley grass juice extract powder




*Wild blueberries

*Lemon water

*Green tea

2. Make a heavy metal detox smoothie.

This is an easy and effective way to get rid of heavy metals. I suggest drinking this smoothie first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, or two hours after a meal. And yes, you can drink water before!

Here is a recipe to get started:


1 banana

1 cup wild blueberries

1 cup cilantro

1 tsp barley grass juice powder

1 cup water, orange or coconut juice to blend

Just throw the ingredients in a blender until its smooth and enjoy!

3. Increase your fiber intake.

I suggest increasing your fiber intake to at least 30-50 grams per day. Eating fiber-rich foods will prevent the build-up of toxins and pull them out of your body through elimination.

You can increase your fiber intake with foods like:


*Chia seeds

*Legumes (chickpeas, lentils, peas)

*Cruciferous vegetables



*Low-sugar fruits

Make sure you are pairing your high fiber intake with at least 6-8 glasses of water a day to help flush out toxins and improve elimination.

Taking small steps each day to improve your overall health and wellness will benefit your longevity and keep you more vitalized. If doing a heavy metal detox is new to you, start with one tip and slowly begin to incorporate the others.
