A few months ago, a client came to me exhausted, foggy, and frustrated. She had persistent
bloating, sugar cravings, and eczema flares that no lab test could explain. “Everything looks
normal,” she was told—but she didn’t feel normal. After reviewing her history (multiple
antibiotics, poor sleep, high stress) and running a stool test, we uncovered Candida overgrowth.
Within weeks of targeted support, her digestion, energy, and skin dramatically improved.
Stories like hers are far from rare. If you’re experiencing unexplained gut issues, Candida may
be your gut’s way of waving a red flag.
What Is Candida Overgrowth, Really?
Candida albicans is a yeast that naturally lives in our digestive tracts. But when it grows
unchecked—often after antibiotics, high-sugar diets, chronic stress, or suppressed immunity—it
can crowd out good bacteria, damage the gut lining, and release toxins that impact your body
far beyond the gut.
Common Symptoms That Might Point to Candida
Candida symptoms often feel vague—but together, they tell a story. Many of my clients have
reported:
● Digestive issues: bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea
● Brain fog: feeling like you're walking through a cloud
● Skin issues: eczema, acne, rashes
● Elevated hs‐CRP or unexplained inflammation
● Anxiety, mood swings, or sugar cravings
● Frequent yeast infections
Quick tip: If you feel worse after eating sugar or carbs—think brain fog, bloat, or
fatigue—it may be feeding yeast.
How Candida Affects the Brain and Body
This isn’t just about your belly. Yeast like Candida produce toxins (e.g. acetaldehyde) that affect
the liver, mitochondria, and even neurotransmitters. Dr. Mark Hyman describes this connection
as a classic example of the gut-brain axis:
“It’s not in your head—it may be in your gut.”
Testing for Candida: Don’t Guess—Test
I use objective tools to confirm overgrowth before beginning treatment:
● Stool PCR testing (DNA-based) for Candida species
● Organic acids test for fungal metabolites like D-arabinitol
● Inflammatory markers: hs-CRP, ferritin, and gut permeability markers
● Symptom tracking journal to identify patterns (grab my free tracker)
The 5-Step Candida Reset Protocol
1. Clean Up the Diet
Start with a yeast-reducing anti-inflammatory plan:
● Remove added sugar, refined carbs, and alcohol
● Limit kombucha, vinegars, and moldy foods (like peanuts and aged cheese)
● Build meals around clean proteins, non-starchy vegetables, healthy fats, and fiber
2. Rebuild the Foundations
Gut repair doesn’t happen in isolation. Candida thrives when the body is stressed, inflamed, or
sleep-deprived.
● Prioritize sleep (7–9 hours)
● Move daily—even light walking counts
● Practice nervous system regulation (breathwork, cold plunge, or journaling)
3. Break Down Biofilms + Kill Off Overgrowth
Candida protects itself with sticky biofilms that make it harder to eliminate. In practice, I often
include:
● Antifungal herbs (e.g., oregano, caprylic acid, berberine)
● Digestive enzymes or proteolytics to disrupt biofilm structures
● Timing matters: antifungals typically run for 4–8 weeks depending on the case
4. Support Detox Pathways
As yeast die off, they release toxins that need to be cleared through the liver, kidneys, and
lymph.
● Stay hydrated and sweat regularly (sauna, movement)
● Prioritize bowel regularity—no daily poops = recirculated toxins
● Include cruciferous vegetables, bitters, and lemon water daily
5. Rebuild the Microbiome & Mucosal Barrier
Once Candida is under control, we focus on rebuilding:
● Introduce diverse probiotics and prebiotics
● Include fermented foods (sauerkraut, kefir) only after the initial kill phase
● Add nutrients like L-glutamine and zinc to repair the gut lining
Functional Wins You May Notice
Within weeks of targeted support, clients often report:
● Clearer thinking
● Less bloating or gas
● Improved skin tone and fewer rashes
● More stable mood and energy
● Normalized hs‐CRP and less systemic inflammation
Healing takes time, but the body responds quickly when we remove what's blocking
it and nourish what's missing.
